What is Wolframalpha?

Is it a mythical creature that is part wolf, part ram, part alpha? Does it devour on google’s when its hungry? When it eats aol’s for breakfast does it do what most of us do and just regurgitate it back out of our system? Is yahoo its desert or salad! Probably why I don’t like desert or salad for that matter.

Like you, when I first too heard of Wolframalpha, I could not help but be intrigued. So I started searching for video, my first choice as a visual learner, and there was none. Then moved onto blogs. For some reason almost every article repeated a bunch of filler that made me want to fall asleep. Nonetheless I really wanted to know what “the new google” was about. “TIP: make sure you are typing in wolframalpha as opposed to wolfmanalpha.” So as I search I came up with the idea to create my new blog around the hottest new term on the net “wolframalpha” if its the new google then with the name in my blog it will surely get read. The main theme was to introduce it in lamest terms and try to make sense of it all.

The best thing since google?

Seems useful, but hardly a “Google killer.” It has an explicitly different purpose. A poor analogy is one that compares the internet to a library. Google is the librarian that helps you find books on the crowded shelves. Wolfram Alpha is the Encyclopedia Britannica that has a shelf to itself, except this one can perform calculations with its own statistics.” — Alex

Thank you Alex I could not put it better myself. So this is good to know that Google will still be relevant to our everyday search engine needs. That is because WolframAlpha is not a Search engine per say, but it is a answer engine. I am pretty sure that even WolframAlpha will be using google…

Who created WolframAlpha?

There are a couple of  suggestions as to where Wolfram|Alpha originated: some say “The Aztecs” others say “The Egyptians” it was neither. If you ever heard of Mathematica then you should know of Stephen Wolfram. He decide to figure out how to communicate with computers using Mathematica to translate our language into the computers language. Imagine computers having their own language and this whole time we have been trying to communicate with them, and they are like ” What the hell are you saying” and so they return our questions in the form of broken answers we call search results. If you were a computer who would you like to answer your question a smooth talking George Clooney or Yoda. (George Clooney representing WolframAlpha of course and Yoda representing Google)

“Fifty years ago, when computers were young, people assumed that they’d quickly be able to handle all these kinds of things. And that one would be able to ask a computer any factual question, and have it compute the answer. But it didn’t work out that way. Computers have been able to do many remarkable and unexpected things. But not that.I’d always thought, though, that eventually it should be possible. And a few years ago, I realized that I was finally in a position to try to do it.” -Stephen Wolfram
